George E. Hawn

George E. Hawn has finally answered the only call he couldn't fix, negotiate, repair, or politely intimidate into going away. George leaves behind his beloved wife, Ginger, after an incredible 55 years of marriage. Together, they built a family that includes their children Susan (Tom), David (Linda), Wendy (Dave),, and Amanda, as well as grandchildren Samantha, Candy, Bailey, Laikyn, Colin, and great-grandchildren Aiden, Xavier, Clark, Luna and Corbin. He was also survived by sister Chirs Zima and brother Bill Hawn. While they mourn his passing, they also know he'll be keeping an eye on everyone from above, probably offering unsolicited advice on how things could be done better. (His beloved cats, Rusty and Pepper, will especially miss their daily scratches, treats, and the unwavering belief that they, not George, actually run the house.) For 30 years, George served as a Milwaukee police officer, protecting his community with dedication, integrity, and a voice loud enough to be heard several blocks away without the aid of a radio. Criminals respected him, citizens trusted him, and young men hoping to date his daughters feared him. Standing tall enough to make most people feel like they should stand up straighter, George possessed a legendary handshake that could instantly reveal your character, your intentions, and possibly the condition of your wrist. He had an intimidating presence, but anyone who knew him understood that beneath the booming voice and stern exterior was a giant soft-hearted teddy bear who would do absolutely anything for family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers. And George never met a stranger. Whether at the grocery store, a restaurant, a race track, or a gas station halfway across the country, someone always seemed to know him. Family members often joked that traveling with George took twice as long because every outing included at least three conversations, two stories, and one person saying, "Hey George!" An avid bicyclist in his younger years, George loved movement almost as much as he loved motors. If it had wheels and went fast, he was interested. NASCAR, local races, televised races, races nobody else had heard of, George watched them all. If heaven has a speedway, he's already found the best seat. When he wasn't cheering on race cars, George could usually be found in his workshop. There was seemingly nothing he couldn't build, repair, modify, improve, or troubleshoot. His family will remember his strength, generosity, humor, protectiveness, endless willingness to help, and ability to make everyone feel like a friend. They'll miss his stories, his laugh, his larger-than-life personality, and the comfort of knowing that if something was broken, George would know exactly what to do. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests tightening a loose screw, helping a neighbor, watching a race, taking a bike ride, or introducing yourself to someone you've never met. George would have approved. Rest easy, George. The race is run, the tools are put away, and the handshake line is waiting. ❤️ Visitation will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at ROZGA FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES - Rozga-Walloch Chapel (4309 S. 20th St, Milwaukee 53221) followed by Funeral Service at 1:00 PM, Rev. Douglas Schroeder, officiating. Private interment Arlington Park Cemetery.
